RESUMO

This retrospective study aims to examine the correlation between calcium oxalate (CaOx) stones and common clinical tests, as well as urine ionic composition. Additionally, we aim to develop and implement a personalized model to assess the accuracy and feasibility of using charts to predict calcium oxalate stones in patients with urinary tract stones. A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 960 patients who underwent surgery for urinary stones at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2022. Among these patients, 447 were selected for further analysis based on screening criteria. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was then performed to identify the best predictive features for calcium oxalate stones from the clinical data of the selected patients. A prediction model was developed using these features and presented in the form of a nomogram graph. The performance of the prediction model was assessed using the C-index, calibration curve, and decision curve, which evaluated its discriminative power, calibration, and clinical utility, respectively. The nomogram diagram prediction model developed in this study is effective in predicting calcium oxalate stones which is helpful in screening and early identification of high-risk patients with calcium oxalate urinary tract stones, and may be a guide for urologists in making clinical treatment decisions.

Introduction: Meteorological and environmental factors can affect people's lives and health, which is crucial among the older adults. However, it is currently unclear how they specifically affect the physical condition of older adults people. Methods: We collected and analyzed the basic physical examination indicators of 41 older adults people for two consecutive years (2021 and 2022), and correlated them with meteorological and environmental factors. Partial correlation was also conducted to exclude unrelated factors as well. Results: We found that among the physical examination indicators of the older adults for two consecutive years, five indicators (HB, WBC, HbAlc, CB, LDL-C) showed significant differences across the population, and they had significantly different dynamic correlation patterns with six meteorological (air pressure, temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speed, and sunshine duration) and seven air quality factors (NO2, SO2, PM10, O3-1h, O3-8h, CO, PM2.5). Discussion: Our study has discovered for the first time the dynamic correlation between indicators in normal basic physical examinations and meteorological factors and air quality indicators, which will provide guidance for the future development of policies that care for the healthy life of the older adults.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to use deep learning (DL) of intraoperative images of urinary stones to predict the composition of urinary stones. In this way, the laser frequency and intensity can be adjusted in real time to reduce operation time and surgical trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 490 patients who underwent holmium laser surgery during the two-year period from March 2021 to March 2023 and had stone analysis results were collected by the stone laboratory. A total of 1658 intraoperative stone images were obtained. The eight stone categories with the highest number of stones were selected by sorting. Single component stones include calcium oxalate monohydrate (W1), calcium oxalate dihydrate (W2), magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate, apatite carbonate (CH) and anhydrous uric acid (U). Mixed stones include W2 + U, W1 + W2 and W1 + CH. All stones have intraoperative videos. More than 20 intraoperative high-resolution images of the stones, including the surface and core of the stones, were available for each patient via FFmpeg command screenshots. The deep convolutional neural network (CNN) ResNet-101 (ResNet, Microsoft) was applied to each image as a multiclass classification model. RESULTS: The composition prediction rates for each component were as follows: calcium oxalate monohydrate 99% (n = 142), calcium oxalate dihydrate 100% (n = 29), apatite carbonate 100% (n = 131), anhydrous uric acid 98% (n = 57), W1 + W2 100% (n = 82), W1 + CH 100% ( n = 20) and W2 + U 100% (n = 24). The overall weighted recall of the cellular neural network component analysis for the entire cohort was 99%. CONCLUSION: This preliminary study suggests that DL is a promising method for identifying urinary stone components from intraoperative endoscopic images. Compared to intraoperative identification of stone components by the human eye, DL can discriminate single and mixed stone components more accurately and quickly. At the same time, based on the training of stone images in vitro, it is closer to the clinical application of stone images in vivo. This technology can be used to identify the composition of stones in real time and to adjust the frequency and energy intensity of the holmium laser in time. The prediction of stone composition can significantly shorten the operation time, improve the efficiency of stone surgery and prevent the risk of postoperative infection.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder cancer (BC) is a major health concern that poses a significant threat to the population, with an increasing incidence rate and a high risk of recurrence and progression. The primary clinical method for diagnosing bladder cancer is cystoscopy, but due to the limitations of traditional white light cystoscopy and inadequate clinical experience among junior physicians, its detection rate for bladder tumor, especially small and flat lesions, is relatively low. However, recent years have seen remarkable advancements in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the field of medicine. This has led to the development of numerous AI algorithms that have been successfully integrated into medical practices, providing valuable assistance to clinicians. The purpose of this study is to develop a cystoscopy algorithm that is real-time, cost-effective, high-performing, and accurate, with the aim of enhancing the detection rate of bladder tumors during cystoscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this study, a dataset of 3500 cystoscopic images obtained from 100 patients diagnosed with bladder cancer was collected, and a deep learning model was developed utilizing the U-Net algorithm within a convolutional neural network for training purposes. RESULTS: This study randomly divided 3,500 images from 100 bladder cancer patients into training and validation groups, and each patient's pathology result was confirmed. In the validation group, the accuracy of tumor recognition by the U-Net algorithm reached 98%. Compared to primary urologists, with greater accuracy and faster detection speed. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the potential of U-Net-based deep learning techniques in the detection of bladder tumors. The establishment and optimization of the U-Net model is a significant breakthrough and it provides a valuable reference for future research in the field of medical image processing.

[Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) (Fe-triazole) spin crossover molecules show thermal, electrical, and optical switching between high spin (HS) and low spin (LS) states, making them promising candidates for molecular spintronics. The LS and HS transitions originate from the electronic configurations of Fe(II) and are considered to be diamagnetic and paramagnetic, respectively. The Fe(II) LS state has six paired electrons in the ground states with no interaction with the magnetic field and a diamagnetic behavior is usually observed. While the bulk magnetic properties of Fe-triazole compounds are widely studied by standard magnetometry techniques, their magnetic properties at the individual level are missing. Here we use nitrogen vacancy (NV) based magnetometry to study the magnetic properties of the Fe-triazole LS state of nanoparticle clusters and individual nanorods of size varying from 20 to 1000 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy are performed to determine the size of the nanoparticles/nanorods and to confirm their respective spin states. The magnetic field patterns produced by the nanoparticles/nanorods are imaged by NV magnetic microscopy as a function of applied magnetic field (up to 350 mT) and correlated with SEM and Raman. We found that in most of the nanorods the LS state is slightly paramagnetic, possibly originating from the surface oxidation and/or the greater Fe(III) presence along the nanorods' edges. NV measurements on the Fe-triazole LS state nanoparticle clusters revealed both diamagnetic and paramagnetic behavior. Our results highlight the potential of NV quantum sensors to study the magnetic properties of spin crossover molecules and molecular magnets.

OBJECTIVE: Triclosan (TCS), a novel endocrine disrupter, has induced widespread human exposure due to its widespread use in personal care products. Environmental TCS exposure was suggested to be associated with human semen quality. However, little is known about seminal plasma TCS concentration and the risk of low sperm quality. This case-control study is established to examine the relationship between seminal plasma TCS and the risk of low sperm quality. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred men with low sperm quality as cases and one hundred normal men as controls were recruited a fertility clinic in Shijiazhuang, China, during 2018-2019. Seminal plasma TCS concentration was determined using an ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS/MS). Sperm concentration, sperm count, sperm motility and sperm progressive motility were evaluated according to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines to assess the sperm quality. We used the Mann-Whitney rank-sum test and Kruskal-Wallis test to assess the differences of seminal plasma TCS concentration between the cases and the controls. In addition, logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the associations between seminal plasma TCS concentrations and low sperm quality risk adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), abstinence time, smoking, and drinking RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The level of seminal plasma TCS was observed slightly but not significantly higher in the case group than the control group. We also observed significant association between seminal plasma TCS concentrations and semen parameters in both control and case groups. Moreover, the seminal plasma TCS levels at the fourth quartile were found to be more likely to exhibit low sperm quality risk with increased adjusted odds ratios of 2.36 (95% confidence interval 1.03-5.39) compared to the first quartile. Our results reveal that seminal plasma TCS concentration was positively associated with low sperm quality risk.

Domain features and domain walls in lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have attracted broad interest due to their potential impact on optoelectronic properties of this unique class of solution-processable semiconductors. Using nonpolarized light and simple imaging configurations, ferroelastic twin domains and their switchings through multiple consecutive phase transitions are directly visualized. This direct optical contrast originates from finite optical reflections at the wall interface between two compositionally identical, orientationally different, optically anisotropic domains inside the material bulk. The findings show these domain walls serve as internal reflectors and steer energy transport inside halide perovskites optically. First-principles calculations show universal low domain-wall energies and modest energy barriers of domain switching, confirming their prevalent appearance, stable presence, and facile moving observed in the experiments. The generality of ferroelasticity in halide perovskites stems from their soft bonding characteristics. This work shows the feasibility of using LHP twin domain walls as optical guides of internal photoexcitations, capable of nonvolatile on-off switching and tunable positioning endowed by their universal ferroelasticity.

BACKGROUND: The antimicrobial agent triclosan (TCS) has attracted much attention worldwide because of its pervasive existence in the human body and environment. TCS exposure has been reported to be associated with decreased male reproductive function. However, few studies have investigated these associations in humans. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between TCS in urine and male semen quality. METHODS: A total of 406 men from a reproductive clinic were enrolled in this study. Urinary TCS concentrations were determined by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Sixteen semen parameters were assessed according to the guidelines of World Health Organization (WHO), including parameters for volume, count, motility, and motion. We used multivariate linear regression models and restricted cubic splines to estimate the linear and non-linear associations between TCS exposure and semen parameters, respectively. Logistical regression models were further applied to explore the associations with abnormal semen quality. RESULTS: TCS was detected in 74.6% of urine specimens. The monotonous trend of TCS tertiles and continuous TCS levels with all semen quality parameters were not observed in multivariate linear regression models (p > 0.05). However, compared with those in the lowest tertile, subjects in the second tertile showed significantly higher linearity and wobble (p < 0.05), indicating potential effects on sperm motion. In the models using restricted cubic splines with 3-5 knots, there were no significant non-linear associations between TCS exposure and any semen quality parameter. In addition, TCS tertiles were not associated with the risk of abnormal semen quality (i.e., count and motility) in the logistical regression models. CONCLUSION: Our results revealed that low-level TCS exposure may have limited (none or modest) effects on male semen quality, potentially inducing some fluctuations. Further mechanistic studies on low levels of exposure are needed.

Emerging evidence suggests that selenium plays an essential role in sperm maturation. However, the specific signaling pathway by which selenium exerts effect has not been elucidated. To evaluate the effect of selenium on GPX4-mediated lipid peroxidation and apoptosis in germ cells, selenium deficiency was modeled by culturing GC2-spd cells in serum-free medium. Treatment with 0.5-µM sodium selenite (NaSe) or 5.0-µM selenomethionine (SeMet) significantly improved the proliferation rate and GPX4 protein expression after selenium deficiency. Moreover, NaSe and SeMet decreased the MDA content and lipid peroxidation. When adenovirus was used to knockdown the expression of the GPX4 gene (shRNA-GPX4), the early apoptosis rate of the shRNA-GPX4 cells was significantly higher than that of the EGFP cells. Increased expression of Caspase3 and Bax, as well as MDA content were observed in the shRNA-GPX4 cells compared with EGFP cells. In further, overexpression of the GPX4 gene (ORF-GPX4) cells exhibited increased cell proliferation and decreased MDA content. However, there was no significant difference in 12/15-lox expression both in ORF-GPX4 cells and shRNA-GPX4 cells. Conclusively, GPX4 was involved in the regulation of lipid peroxidation and apoptosis in GC2-spd cells. Selenium played a role in promoting cell proliferation by mediating GPX4. The regulation of GPX4 may occur independently of 12/15-Lox. These findings confirmed the effect of selenium on spermatogenesis and offered a potential target for treating abnormal semen quality in men.

Animal studies have revealed that exposure to neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) could compromise male reproductive function; however, related data on the occurrence of NNIs and their specific metabolites in human seminal plasma are scarce. To explore the potential effects of NNI exposure on male semen quality, we determined the concentrations of NNIs and some of their metabolites (collectively defined as mNNIs) in seminal plasma samples collected from men (n = 191) who visited a fertility clinic in Shijiazhuang, North China from 2018 to 2019. Associations between the mNNI concentrations and semen quality parameters were assessed using linear regression models, adjusting for important covariates. In the seminal plasma samples, desmethyl-acetamiprid (DM-ACE, detection frequency: 98.4%), imidacloprid-olefin (IMI-olefin, detection frequency: 86.5%), and desmethyl-clothianidin (DM-CLO, detection frequency: 70.8%) were frequently detected at median concentrations of 0.052, 0.003, and 0.007 ng/mL, respectively; meanwhile other compounds were detected at less than the method detection limits. In the single-mNNI models, the IMI-olefin concentration was associated with decreased progressive motility [IMI-olefin concentration: percent change (%Δ) = -17.0; 95% confidence interval (CI) = -30.3, -0.92; the highest tertile compared with the lowest tertile: %Δ = -21.1; 95% CI = -37.5, -0.23]. Similar results were found in the multiple-mNNIs models. No other inverse associations were found between the other mNNI concentrations and semen quality parameters. This is the first study to identify the occurrence of mNNIs in the seminal plasma and the potential associations of their concentrations with human semen quality parameters. These findings imply an inverse association between the IMI-olefin concentration and semen quality.

Fipronil (FP) is an emerging insecticide which could induce reproductive toxicity in male rats at very low dosage, but the occurrence of FP and its transformation products (FPs) in human seminal plasma and their impacts on human semen quality have not been documented. In this study, FPs including FP, fipronil desulfinyl (FP-DES), fipronil sulfone (FP-SFO), fipronil amide (FP-AM), and fipronil sulfide (FP-SFI), were measured in seminal plasma samples (n = 200), which were collected from Shijiazhuang, north China. The cumulative concentration of FPs (ΣFPs), in the seminal plasma samples ranged from 0.003 to 0.180 ng/mL (median: 0.043 ng/mL). FP-SFO was the major target analyte (median: 0.040 ng/mL), accounting for approximately 42.3-100.0% of the ΣFPs. Significantly higher exposure levels of FPs were found in the overweight or obese group (≥25 kg/m2) vs. the normal BMI group (18.5-25 kg/m2) (ΣFPs: 0.047 vs. 0.033 ng/mL), never smoking group vs. current smoking group (ΣFPs: 0.057 vs. 0.037 ng/mL), and low sexual frequency group (<1 time/week) vs. high sexual frequency group (≥3 times/week) (ΣFPs: 0.048 vs. 0.030 ng/mL). No significant association between FPs and impaired semen quality parameter was found in this study. This is the first time to report FPs' occurrence in human seminal plasma and variations in their concentrations among people with different demographic and behavioral characteristics. Further studies on adverse effects of exposure to FPs on reproductive function are needed.

AIMS: Low sperm quality, a crucial factor of male infertility, is becoming a public health issue all over the world. In male reproductive system, autophagy plays an important role in maintaining physiological functions. There exist conjectures that disordered autophagy autophagy might be related to low sperm quality. However, there is no evidence can confirm that. This study aims to investigate the association between autophagy-associated genes and low sperm quality. METHODS: Sperm samples of low sperm quality cases and matched controls were included to select differential expressed genes (DE genes) by autophagy-related functional gene microarray analysis. Then, 104 cases and 250 controls were included to validate the expression of four important autophagy genes (CXCR4, ESR1, PTEN and LC3B). Based on the obtained DE gene, gene Ontology and pathway analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Chip results showed that expression of all 18 DE genes were decreased in the cases compared to the controls (P < 0.05). Expression of ESR1 were verified to be significantly decreased (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our results provided clues with the association among down-regulated expression of autophagy regulating and associated genes and low sperm quality. These findings revealed possible role of impaired autophagy in the mechanism of low sperm quality. Moreover, these may also provide potential targets for the treatment of low sperm quality.

As a crucial factor in male reproduction, androgens may represent an intermediate biological mechanism linking metal exposure with effects on semen quality. This study aimed to investigate the association between metal exposure and semen quality, and to assess the mediating role of seminal androgens between metal exposure and semen quality. We investigated the presence of 10 metals in semen and assessed their effect on semen quality in 1136 men recruited from a hospital in Shenzhen, China. Of these, 464 subjects were randomly selected for 4 androgens detection in semen. Cross-sectional associations between single/multiple metals, androgen levels and semen quality were explored by multivariable linear regressions. Mediation analysis was performed to detect the role of seminal androgens on the association between metal exposure and semen quality. Seminal selenium and iron were positively associated with both sperm concentration and total sperm count. Negative associations were observed between both manganese and zinc and sperm concentration, molybdenum and total sperm count, copper and sperm motility. Furthermore, we found significant dose-dependent relationships between both iron and selenium levels and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), arsenic levels and testosterone, as well as zinc and dehydroepiandrosterone. Mediation analysis indicated that higher seminal iron and selenium were associated with an increasing sperm concentration after controlling for DHT, with 10.32% and 12.89% of these associations were mediated by DHT, respectively. A similar mediation effect of DHT was observed in the associations between iron and selenium levels and total sperm count (13.39% and 21.57% mediation, respectively). Our findings suggested that the presence of selenium and iron in semen was beneficial to sperm concentration and total count. Seminal manganese, zinc, molybdenum and copper may be associated with reduced semen quality. The associations between seminal selenium and iron and sperm concentration and total count were partially explained by the concomitant variation of seminal DHT.

Triclosan (TCS), as a widely used antimicrobial compound, is commonly detected in pregnant women and newborns indicating exposure risk during early development. However, whether perinatal TCS exposure has long-term effects on the host microbiome which further contributes to metabolic disorder is still unclear. The long-term effects of perinatal TCS exposure on gut microbiota and liver metabolism in adulthood and old age were investigated. Rats were given 0, 10 or 50 mg TCS/kg body weight per day, administered daily by gavage from gestation day 0 until lactation day 21. RNA-sequencing and 16 S rDNA amplicon sequencing analysis were performed to explore the potential mechanisms. Increased blood glucose and serum HDL-C were observed at 10 mg/kg/day in old rats and at 50 mg/kg/day in both adult and old rats. Serum leptin were increased at two doses in old rats. Serum TG and LDL-C were increased at two doses in both adult and old rats. Hepatic glycogen were decreased at 50 mg/kg/day in adult rats and at two doses in old rats. Increased hepatic TG were observed at two doses in old rats. Hepatic RNA-sequencing revealed that more differentially expressed genes were found at 50 mg/kg/day in both adult and old rats. More up-regulated genes in pathways of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism were observed in old rats at 50 mg/kg/day. Diversity reduction and compositional alteration were found in gut microbiota at 50 mg/kg/day in adult rats and at two doses in old rats. These effects lasted for a long time even without TCS exposure and accumulated over time inducing metabolic disorder in old rat offspring. TCS exposure during early life causes disturbances in metabolism and gut microbiota which last a lifetime and accumulated over time at 50 mg/kg/day. Further research is needed to investigate the effects of early life TCS exposure on metabolism and gut microbiota in humans.

BACKGROUND: Heavy metal exposure induces oxidative stress, which is critical for adverse male reproductive health. OBJECTIVE: To explore the mediating effect of oxidative stress on the relationship of heavy metal exposure with semen quality. METHODS: Urinary levels of three oxidative stress markers, semen quality, and urinary arsenic, cadmium and lead were examined among 1020 men. Multivariate linear regression was applied to explore cross-sectional associations, and the role of oxidative stress as mediators was investigated. RESULTS: Quartiles of metals showed significant dose-dependent relationships with increasing levels of 8-hydroxy-2deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-isoPGF2α) and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal-mercapturic acid (HNE-MA). Significant or suggestive associations were also found between urinary 8-OHdG levels and the percentage of normal sperm morphology (ptrend < 0.001), between urinary 8-isoPGF2α levels and total motility (ptrend = 0.052), progressive motility (ptrend = 0.050) respectively. The mediation analysis showed that about 14.59%, 18.06%, 15.35% or 16.49% of the association between arsenic/cadmium exposure and the decreased total motility/progressive motility was mediated by 8-isoPGF2α, respectively. In addition, about 16.47% of the relationship between lead exposure and the decreased percentage of normal sperm morphology was mediated by 8-OHdG. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that higher urinary arsenic, cadmium and lead levels were associated with increased oxidative stress markers, which also related with altered semen quality. 8-isoPGF2α and 8-OHdG might be the possible mediators of the associations between urinary heavy metals and total motility, progressive motility or the proportion of normal sperm morphology.

Atherosclerosis (AS), a severe disease characterized by an accumulation of lipids and fibers in the large arteries, is the most important contributor to ischemic stroke (IS). Although microRNAs (miRNAs) have been found in circulating blood, the role of miRNAs in the progression of AS remains unknown. In a previous study, we demonstrated that the spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) gene plays a vital role in the process of IS. In the present study, we aimed to clarify whether the miRNAs targeting the Syk gene might slow the development of AS. Candidate miRNAs were screened in U937 and THP-1 cells via Bioinformatics analyses, RT-qPCR and dual-luciferase reporter assay. ApoE-/- mice were used as an AS animal model. RAAV transfection was performed to identify the roles of Syk gene and miRNAs in the development of AS in ApoE-/- mice. HE staining, Oil red O staining and immunohistochemistry were used to determine the mechanism of AS. RT-qPCR and western blotting were performed to determine the expressions of miRNAs and proteins, respectively. Over-expression of the Syk gene accelerated the development of AS. miR-377 effectively mediated the expression of the Syk gene in vitro and in vivo experiments. Further analysis indicated that over-expression of miR-377 partly alleviated the development of AS by down-regulating the expression of the Syk gene. This study identifies a novel role of miR-377 in AS via targeting Syk.

BACKGROUND: Phytoestrogens (PEs) are naturally estrogen-like chemicals, and increasing evidences have indicated their endocrine disruption effects on male reproductivity, but the conclusions from previous epidemiological studies were controversial. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between nine phytoestrogens in semen and semen quality in a Chinese population. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 1319 reproductive-aged men were recruited from Shenzhen, China. Semen phytoestrogens were measured by ultra-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. Semen quality was assessed by sperm concentration, sperm count, progressive motility, total motility, volume, and the sperm motion parameters. Both multivariate linear regression and logistic regression models were conducted to evaluate the associations between semen phytoestrogens and semen quality with adjustment for confounders. RESULTS: In logistic regression models, we found significant associations between semen secoisolariciresinol (SEC) and lower sperm concentrations (odd ratios (OR): 2.38; 95% confidence interval, 95% CI: 1.47, 3.93), sperm counts (OR: 2.27; 95% CI: 1.34, 3.94), and total motility (OR: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.08, 2.24). Negative associations were also observed for semen genistein (GEN) with sperm counts (OR: 2.28; 95% CI: 1.29, 4.14; p for trend = 0.04) and sperm concentrations (OR: 1.98; 95% CI: 1.21, 3.03; p for trend = 0.07). Semen naringenin (NAR) were found to be positively associated with progressive motility (OR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.38, 0.83) and total motility (OR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.40, 0.81). Results from multivariate linear regression models were similar to those from logistic regression models for semen SEC, GEN, and NAR. CONCLUSIONS: We suggested that semen levels of phytoestrogens may be associated with semen quality in men. Further investigations are warranted to confirm the findings in prospective studies and to explore the underlying mechanism.

Lead-halide perovskites have emerged as promising materials for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. Their significantly anharmonic lattice motion, in contrast to conventional harmonic semiconductors, presents a conceptual challenge in understanding the genesis of their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Here we report a strongly temperature dependent luminescence Stokes shift in the electronic spectra of both hybrid and inorganic lead-bromide perovskite single crystals. This behavior stands in stark contrast to that exhibited by more conventional crystalline semiconductors. We correlate the electronic spectra with the anti-Stokes and Stokes Raman vibrational spectra. Dielectric solvation theories, originally developed for excited molecules dissolved in polar liquids, reproduce our experimental observations. Our approach, which invokes a classical Debye-like relaxation process, captures the dielectric response originating from the incipient anharmonicity of the LO phonon at about 20 meV (160 cm-1) in the lead-bromide framework. We reconcile this liquid-like model incorporating thermally-activated dielectric solvation with more standard solid-state theories of the emission Stokes shift in crystalline semiconductors.
